Comedian Mike Birbiglia achieved comedy cult status in 2006 with the nationwide release of his Comedy Central CD, Two Drink Mike, and the accompanying Comedy Central sponsored Medium Man on Campus college tour. For the past several years, Mike has toured the country honing the act that made him one of the youngest comedians to ever appear on The Late Show with David Letterman and popularized the phrase “Cracker Please” as well as the renaming of George Bush as “Whiffle Ball Tony.” Mike has also toured supporting the CD Sleepwalk With Me and appeared on Comedy Central’s National Tour: Mike Birbiglia’s Secret Public Tour. Mike is a talk show regular and the star of two Comedy Central Presents specials, but what has truly galvanized his fan base is his “Secret Public Journal,” a weekly blog that he emails to thirty thousand fans and broadcasts to millions on the nationallysyndicated Bob & Tom Radio Show. Cosby, have truly defined Birbiglia’s public persona.

Indigenous is an American blues-rock group that came to prominence in the late 1990s. The band originally consisted of two brothers, Mato Nanji (vocals and guitar, b. 1974), Pte (bass guitar), along with their sister, Wanbdi (drums, vocals), and their cousin, Horse (percussion). Their music is heavily influenced by guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana. Mato Nanji's style and skill has drawn comparisons to each of these guitarists. The band has also shared the stage with artists of varying musical genres such as B.B. King, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, the Indigo Girls, Jackson Browne, Dave Matthews Band, and Los Lonely Boys. The band has headlined its own tours several times. The Nakota Nation members grew up on South Dakota's Yankton Indian Reservation, where their father, Greg Zephier became a spokesperson for Native American rights. A musician in his own right during the 60s and '70s, Zephier provided his children with records from blues musicians such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Freddie King, and taught them to play their respective instruments. The family started touring together, and soon the children were performing on their own.

Great Big Sea is a bastard. Forged from the loins of Figgy Duff and Ryan’s Fancy, GBS found its feet on the unforgiving streets of St. John’s, and stood their ground when others faltered. When asked about their unlikely success, founding member Bob Hallett is typically candid: “We weren’t the best musicians in town,” he says, “we just wanted it more. We were driven by a bloody-minded need to succeed and we were rewarded for our bleeding.” The band dragged themselves out of the city’s infamous bars to release their Warner debut Up in the spring of 1995. Relentless touring and a raucous live show quickly propelled the record to platinum. Their next effort Play enjoyed even bigger success and the band moved its show into hockey stadiums across the nation. The US labels took notice and GBS was subsequently signed to Sire by Seymour Stein (Madonna/Talking Heads), who unleashed the band on an unsuspecting American public. Accolades and a solid cult following ensued. “We are showmen and we live and die by our trade,” offers electrified lead singer Alan Doyle. “I am drawn to the light and I was born to burn”. Born and raised in ‘the far east of the western world’, the lads have traversed the globe, all the while wearing their hometown on their sleeves. “Our music is of Newfoundland,” explains McCann. “It would be impossible to do what we do if we were from anywhere else. Our songs come from the sea and the cliffs and the rocks and all the other natural beauties our country provides. Without her we simply couldn’t exist.”

Abigail Washburn never set out to be a songwriter or a recording artist. So when she found herself on stage in a smoke filled Beijing club playing her banjo and singing old time Appalachian mountain music in Chinese to a packed house, she was as surprised as anyone. “During my Freshman year at Colorado College, I joined a summer program trip to China,” Washburn recalled. “It had a profound effect on me. I discovered a Chinese culture that was so deep and ancient; it changed my perspective on America.” She entered the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at MerleFest and won second place for “Rockabye Dixie.” Nettwerk Records A&R met her in a coffee shop, prompted her to finish a demo and within months signed her to a recording contract. Fall of 2004 she merged her love of China with her new career in American roots music by arranging a small group of good friends and bluegrass pros for a mini-tour of China. “I did ten days with the band and a couple of solo dates,” Washburn said. “The audience was mostly Chinese at the Universities and mainly ex-pats at the bars. We played American folk songs, and original material in both Chinese and English, and it seemed to go over well. At this point, I’m caught between two cultures, but I like being a bridge. I want to keep going to China and living a creative existence. I want to learn more about Chinese folk traditions, so I can integrate them into my music and continue to be a part of the development of a more universal language.”

Monte Montgomery has taken the acoustic guitar beyond anyone's expectations. With his amazing fretwork, unique combination finger and pick style playing through trailblazing "chordal" thoroughfares often baffling even the most accomplished players. While Monte remains a huge enigma in the guitar universe, his legendary reputation has spread like wildfire since he appeared on Austin City Limits. In 2004 Monte was named on Guitar Player Magazine's list of "Top 50 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time" and in 2005 he was featured the Covers of "Frets" and "Acoustic Guitar" magazines. Countless articles have been written about Monte describing him "The Evel Knivel of Guitar", "Six Strings Attached To Dynamite", "The Answer To The Fermi Paradox" and "The Acoustic Shred Master" just to name a few. Monte's fretwork has become the benchmark for acoustic guitar players. "An American Original", there is no doubt Monte Montgomery is destined to become An American Legend.

The musical landscape is teeming with singer/songwriters, many of them quite capable, but only a handful have something truly distinctive to offer. Kate Voegele belongs in the latter category. Don’t Look Away, Voegele’s first full-length album (MySpace Records), is a revelation, as the 20-year-old writer/singer, belying her tender years, delivers songs of depth and insight with a powerfully seductive voice that maintains a fierce presence amid dynamic rock grooves and infectious pop hooks. Produced by the veteran Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Mark Broussard), Don’t Look Away is a bravura effort from an old soul with a youthful spirit; think of her album as a female parallel to John Mayer’s Room for Squares—at once a zeitgeist-capturing landmark and the launchpad for a viable career.

Atlantic recording group NEEDTOBREATHE makes a powerful homecoming with their eagerly anticipated second album, “THE HEAT.” Co-produced by the band alongside Rick Beato (Shinedown, Jump Little Children) and Collective Soul mastermind Ed Roland, the record sees the South Carolina- based rock outfit digging into their down-home roots to create a remarkably passionate and personal new collection. Songs such as the acoustic-tinged “Again” and the rejoiceful “Signature of Divine (Yahweh)” see the band melding warm, organic textures to their powerful brand of skyscraping, heartfelt rock. With “THE HEAT,” NEEDTOBREATHE blazes a new musical trail, revealing not just the depth of its spirit, but the far reaches of its soul. “There are moments in music – maybe it’s a whole song, sometimes it’s just a portion – that when you hear it, it just breaks you down,” says singer/guitarist/pianist/songwriter Bear Rinehart. “We really wanted to get those kinds of moments on this record. We wanted this record to hit people in a really strong way.”

Matt Nathanson doesn't waste any time setting the tone for his transfixing new album, Some Mad Hope. Diving headlong into a sea of chiming guitars, the San Francisco-based singer-songwriter breathlessly declares "I'm wide awake and so alive" -- the opening lines of "Car Crash" serving as a statement of emotional clarity that permeates the disc's every groove. Some Mad Hope, Nathanson's sixth studio album (and first for Vanguard), is in many ways his most fully-realized work to date. Recorded over the past two and a half years, the 12-song set displays a sonic depth that dovetails perfectly with what he admits is a newfound songwriting confidence. "Every time I make a record, I think 'this is it!,'" Nathanson says with a laugh. "But I don't think I really understood how to make a record until this one. The process and the result had much more of a dynamic to it -- like we weren't just presenting songs -- it felt like the longest childbirth in the history of childbirths, but by the end, we really got it."

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sonya Kitchell has delivered the goods on her new album This Storm — 12 timeless tunes that document her evolution from emerging artist into a sophisticated musician and songwriter with something meaningful to say about the human condition. Her lyrics are sometimes personal and often political, but all are insightful and deeply felt. Kitchell’s growth as an artist is apparent from the opening moments of the album’s breathtaking lead track, “For Every Drop.” A clear departure from mild singer-songwriter fare, the track’s jittery heartbeat pulses over a lightly tinkling piano before building to a massive chorus, where Kitchell’s otherworldly voice rises commandingly over unrestrained guitars. Musical surprises abound throughout, from the edgy, impassioned rock of “Fire” to the country-blues twang of “Running” to the drifting, textured alt-pop of “This Storm” and “Who Knows After All.” Not that fans of Words Came Back To Me will be out of luck, either: tracks like “Walk Away” and “Robin In The Snow” are quintessential acoustic Kitchell.

Profoundly talented guitarist Tim Reynolds has been cutting killer riffs and spooling rock & roll with funk and soul since the age of 12. Throughout the '90s he has slowly become recognized as one of the impeccable, highly skilled acoustic musicians in the areas of jazz guitar, bass, piano, sitar, mandolin, violin, and various instruments of ethnic percussion. He is an underrated master. Born in Germany, Reynolds was a military brat who spent his young life traveling across the United States, eventually settling in Charlottesville, VA. He joined various psychedelic rock groups, playing heavily into his influences of Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin. He formed TR3 in the late '80s, and later expanded his sound to the likes of Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson. But Reynolds' biggest claim to fame came with his collaborations with Dave Matthews Band. He has guested on all Dave Matthews Band releases and joined them on countless tours across the globe. He and Dave Matthews released the double-disc album Live at Luther College in January 1999, and Reynolds separately issued a slew of solo albums: Stream, Gossip of the Neurons, Sanctuary, and See Into Your Soul.

Dynamic on stage, down to earth off stage, Dan Tyminski has the voice, instrumental chops, and charisma to be counted among the most recognizable and popular male vocalists on today’s bluegrass and country music scenes. Yet his demeanor – low-key and laconically sly – ensures that all the accolades are the product of his own innate gifts. Since 1994, his ace instrumental skill (mainly on guitar, but also on mandolin) and burnished, soulful tenor singing has been a key component of Alison Krauss and Union Station, arguably the most visible and successful bluegrass band in the modern era. Prior to that, he rose to national prominence as a member of bluegrass favorite, the Lonesome River Band. With Union Station on hiatus for most of 2008, Tyminski has formed a new incarnation of the Dan Tyminski Band, with whom he recorded a new album, "Wheels," released June 17th. This new edition includes longtime Union Station associate Barry Bales (bass), former Union Station and Mountain Heart member Adam Steffey (mandolin), sideman extraordinaire Ron Stewart (banjo, fiddle), and newcomer Justin Moses (fiddle, dobro). In 2000, Tyminski stepped further into the popular conscience as the singing voice of George Clooney in the Coen Brothers’ Odyssean farce O Brother, Where Art Thou? In addition to being a pivotal element in the plot of the film, his powerful rendition of the Stanley Brothers’ version of “Man of Constant Sorrow” became a surprise hit single – firing off a popular renaissance in bluegrass in the process. The song was given the CMA Single of the Year award, an IBMA award for Song of the Year (the album was also named the Album of the Year), and a Grammy award for Country Collaboration with Vocals. The album received the Grammy for Album of the Year – a rare achievement for a soundtrack project.

The first thing that strikes a person when they meet Donavon Frankenreiter is that they’ve probably never met a person quite like him before. From his genuine nature, to his big heart, to his all-around charisma, once you connect with his vibe you realize that he is truly unique. Donavon lives an incredible life, one that he never takes for granted. His vocations and drive have enabled him to live the one person’s fantasy, as a reality. First and foremost, you have Donavon the husband to his wife Petra and father to his sons Hendrix and Ozzy. Their love and presence are the driving force in his life, as can be seen by the beautiful tattoo of the three on his forearm. Next you have Donavon the pro-surfer, who has and continues to travel the world extensively surfing in some of the most popular and also most remote places on the globe. As a matter of fact, both Donavon’s surfboard and guitar case have seen more places than most humans ever will. And of course, you have Donavon Frankenreiter the musician, who is about to release his third, and probably most important album to date titled Pass It Around.

With two platinum and four gold albums, Najee is one of the pioneers of what is commonly known as contemporary jazz. A combination of jazz improvisation and R&B, this genre forms a bridge from the jazz fusion of the late 70s to the jazz pop of the mid 80s. As a native New Yorker Najee began his career playing clarinet and later saxophone and flute in his hometown Jamaica, Queens New York. While in high school Najee began studying under the direction of Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, and Billy Taylor at Jazzmobile in Harlem. Najee also studied flute with Harold Jones at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1980 Najee along with his brother Fareed attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston with a concentrated study in performance and composition. In 1983 Najee and Fareed moved back to New York where they were asked to tour with the R&B songstress Chaka Khan. Through his association with Melisa Morgan who was a background vocalist for Chaka Khan, Najee met Charles Huggins of HUSH Productions. Charles invited Najee to record his first debut album through his production company and in 1986 Najee released his first album on EMI. After the release of his debut album, Najee embarked on a US tour with Freddie Jackson. Najees Theme went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy music award in 1987. His sophomore album "Day By Day" also went platinum in 1988. These albums were followed by "Tokyo Blue" (1990), and "Just An Illusion" (1992). Both of these albums went gold. In 1994 Najee recorded "Share My World". Najees 1995 recording on EMI records was dedicated to one of his favorite artist Stevie Wonder titled "Najee Plays Songs from the Key of Life: A Tribute to Stevie Wonder".
